“It was a dark and stormy night” in Hong Kong. It really was… when the seed for the MagnaWatch was planted. I was having dinner with our President of DoodleTop, Terry Hughes, and Umberto Menghi our European sales rep and they were talking about the cool reading glasses they had bought that day, but unfortunately had forgotten to bring with them to dinner. As I read the 20 page menu to them and then got stuck with the check because neither of them could read it, I thought “there must be a better way.” The next day as I rode a train, a guy across from me was looking at a gemstone through a jeweler’s loop. As I looked at him, the light flashed off his watch and I thought “he already has a lens on his watch.” The trick was to see if a lens could be added that was thin enough not to be noticeable. I broke open a pair of kids binoculars and found a magnifying lens that had enough power to work and could pop-up and be used to read right on your wrist. I filed the first of four patents, and began to develop and market the watch.
